Forty days and forty nights. From Noah to Moses to Jesus, to medieval Venice and finally to us, the period of forty days represents struggle and turmoil, but also transformation and new life. (The city-state of Venice was the first to adopt a rule of “quarantine” in the 14th century–forty days of isolation for incoming ships to curb the spread of the plague.) As we enter the forty days of Lent, we remember our own times of struggling with demons and beasts, and listen for the angels of grace and love God continually sends.
The Bible readings for this worship service are: Genesis 9:8-17; Psalm 25:1-10; and Mark 1:9-15. (Unlike the last several services, water will not be needed for this service.)
